Understanding the coat cycle
Most dogs and cats undergo two major moults per year: in spring (shedding the winter undercoat) and autumn (preparing the winter coat). Indoor pets with heating and artificial lighting may moult continuously at lower intensity.
Spring: the big shed
The most intense period. Your pet sheds their thick winter undercoat.
- Daily brushing — essential for 3-4 weeks
- Deshedding tool — effectively removes dead undercoat without damaging guard hair
- Warm bath — helps release loose undercoat. Use gentle shampoo and rinse thoroughly
- Parasite check — fleas and ticks resume activity
Summer: protection and cooling
Contrary to popular belief, NEVER shave a double-coated dog (Husky, Golden, Shepherd). The undercoat acts as thermal insulation that also protects against heat and UV rays.
Essential summer care
- Brush 2-3 times weekly to maintain airflow through the coat
- Apply pet sunscreen on depigmented areas (pink nose, thin ears)
- Check for grass seeds (foxtails) after every walk in tall grass
- Increase ear cleaning frequency (swimming = ear infections)
Autumn: winter preparation
The autumn moult is less dramatic but equally important. The new undercoat growing in will be your pet's protection against winter cold.
- Regular brushing to remove dead hair and stimulate growth
- Omega-3 supplement for a dense, glossy coat
- Final parasite treatment before winter
Winter: comfort and protection
The winter coat is denser and requires specific care:
- Post-walk brushing — removes mud, road salt and moisture
- Paw rinsing — road grit irritates paw pads
- Protective balm — apply petroleum jelly or paw balm before outings
- Drying after rain — a wet coat drying slowly promotes dermatitis
