Preparation: 2 weeks before departure
The vet check-up
Schedule a visit 15 days before departure. Verify vaccinations, parasite treatment, and request a pet passport if crossing borders. For southern destinations (leishmaniasis risk), discuss specific sandfly repellents.
Getting your dog used to the car
If your dog isn't a regular traveller, start with progressive outings: 15 minutes, then 30, then 1 hour. Always associate the car with positive experiences (arrival at the park, a walk).
Essential equipment
- Travel crate or safety harness — mandatory, not optional
- Collapsible bowls and water bottles (2L minimum per travel day)
- Regular food — NEVER change diet while travelling

- Blanket or mat — for rest stops and accommodation
- Waste bags in sufficient quantity
- Health records and passport
- Recent photo of your dog — in case of loss
The 2-hour rule
Plan a 15-20 minute break every 2 hours maximum. Your dog needs to stretch, drink, and relieve themselves. Choose stops with green space — service station car parks aren't ideal.
Temperature: absolute vigilance
At 25°C outside, a car interior reaches 45°C within 30 minutes, even with a window cracked. NEVER leave your dog alone in the car. Use sunshades, air conditioning, and a cooling mat.
Dog-friendly accommodation
Book ahead and explicitly verify the pet policy. Some hotels accept dogs but charge a supplement of £10-30 per night. Holiday rentals usually mention their policy in the listing. At Compagnon Cocoon, we've found that campsites are often the most welcoming towards dogs.
Motion sickness
If your dog drools excessively, vomits, or pants heavily in the car, they likely suffer from motion sickness. Solutions:
- Travel on an empty stomach (last meal 4 hours before)
- Face forward position (not sideways)
- Regular ventilation
- Anti-nausea medication prescribed by your vet for severe cases
