Pet Photography: 10 Tips for Stunning Shots

Pet Photography: 10 Tips for Stunning Shots

Why photographing pets is so challenging

Unlike a landscape, your pet moves constantly, won't look at the camera, and categorically refuses to smile on command. But with a few simple techniques, even a smartphone can produce spectacular results.

1. Natural light, always

Flash blinds animals and produces red (or green) eyes. Always prioritise natural light. Best timing: morning or late afternoon when the light is soft and golden. Position your pet near a window for indoor shots.

2. Get down to their level

Rule number one in pet photography: get to eye level. A shot taken from above flattens perspective and doesn't do justice to your companion. Kneel down or even lie on the floor if needed.

3. Focus on the eyes

Sharp eyes make any photo captivating, even if the rest is slightly soft. On your phone, tap the screen on your pet's eyes to lock focus.

4. Use burst mode

Pets are unpredictable. Burst mode captures 10 images per second. Out of 30 shots, you'll definitely catch THE perfect expression.

5. Background matters

A clean background highlights your pet. Avoid cluttered settings (coffee table, laundry drying). A plain wall, blurred garden, or sky make ideal backdrops.

6. Treats as your photography assistant

Hold a treat just above the lens for direct eye contact. For perked ears, make an unusual sound (paper crinkle, squeaker) just before pressing the shutter.

7. Capture personality

The best photos show your pet's unique character. Your cat has a ridiculous sleeping position? Your dog always tilts their head? These authentic moments make the most memorable photos.

8. Action shots with the right mode

For motion shots (running, jumping, playing), use your camera's sport mode or shoot video and extract a still frame. Shutter speed should be above 1/500 to freeze action.

9. Close-up portraits

A nose, a paw, an eye in macro — close-ups reveal fascinating details and create highly graphic images. Modern smartphone portrait mode works remarkably well for this.

10. Patience above all

Never force your pet to pose. Set up your framing, get comfortable, and wait for the right moment. At Compagnon Cocoon, the best photos from our product tests are always the ones taken when the animal was relaxed and natural — never forced poses.
